Introduction

Zirconia ceramic shaped sheet refers to precision ceramic components with irregular shapes (non-standard round or square pieces) made by pressing and sintering zirconia (ZrO2) powder. It plays a key role in modern industry and is the core foundational component of many high-tech products.

 

Performance

  • Mechanical properties

High strength and toughness: Zirconia (ZrO2) has bending strength (800-1200 MPa) and fracture toughness (5-10 MPa·m1/2) far exceeding ordinary ceramics, making it suitable for complex stress structures.

Wear resistance: Its high hardness (Mohs hardness 8.5-9) makes it suitable for high friction environments such as bearings, seals, etc.

Impact resistance: Compared to traditional ceramics, the phase transformation toughening mechanism of zirconia can absorb impact energy and reduce brittleness.

  • Thermal properties

High temperature resistance: With a melting point of up to 2700℃, it is suitable for high-temperature environments such as aircraft engine components.

Low thermal conductivity (2-3 W/m·K), suitable for insulation or thermal management applications.

Thermal shock resistance: The low thermal expansion coefficient (~10×10-6/℃) enables it to withstand rapid temperature changes.

  • Electrical properties

Partially doped zirconia (such as Y2O3 - ZrO2) can exhibit ion conductivity and be used in solid-state batteries or sensors.It is an excellent electrical insulator at room temperature, with high resistivity and high dielectric constant. But at high temperatures, it exhibits ion conductivity and is the core material for making oxygen sensors.

  • Chemical and Biological Properties

The chemical properties are extremely stable, resistant to strong acid and alkali corrosion, and have physiological inertness. It is non-toxic and harmless, and long-term implantation in the body will not produce rejection reactions.

The application of zirconia ceramic shaped sheets has spanned multiple high-end fields:

  • Electronics and Communication: Ceramic sleeves used for manufacturing fiber optic connectors, smartphone backplates, fingerprint recognition module covers, and precision insulation components used for chip manufacturing equipment.
  • Biomedical: mainly used for oral restoration, such as dental all ceramic teeth and implant abutments. Its aesthetics and biocompatibility make it an ideal alternative to metal porcelain teeth.
  • Textile and Machinery: Used for manufacturing wire wheels, cutting blades, faucet valve cores, etc. By utilizing its wear-resistant and smooth properties, it can solve the problem of metal parts wearing wires or rusting.
  • Automotive and Chemical Industry: Utilizing its high-temperature conductivity as an oxygen sensor substrate for automotive exhaust detection; Utilizing its corrosion resistance, it is used for sealing rings and shaft sleeves in chemical pumps.

Usage

  • Precision machinery manufacturing (e.g. wire wheels, cutters)

In textile or wire cutting machines, high-speed moving metal wires are prone to wear and tear on metal components. Using zirconia wire wheels, their ultra-high hardness (second only to diamond) effectively resists wire wear, and their smooth surface also avoids scratching the wires. Its electrical insulation solves the problem of electrolytic corrosion on wire cutting machines, achieving multiple benefits in one fell swoop.

  • Extreme chemical environments (e.g. pump seals)

In chemical pumps that transport strong acids, it is the sealing element between the dynamic and static rings. Metal will be rapidly corroded here, and zirconia's almost complete chemical inertness makes it the strongest defense line for isolating corrosive media from motors. Combined with its self-lubricating properties, it can operate dry for a short period of time even in the absence of liquid lubrication, preventing equipment from burning out.

High temperature sensing environment (e.g. automotive oxygen sensors)

In the exhaust pipe of a car engine, it is the core component of the sensor. It can withstand high temperature impacts from room temperature to nearly a thousand degrees, while also resisting chemical corrosion from exhaust gases.
