Introduction

1. Overview of Diatomite

1.1 Definition and Formation

Diatomite, also known as diatomaceous earth (DE) or kieselguhr, is a soft, porous, naturally occurring sedimentary rock. It is formed by the fossilized remains of diatoms — single-celled aquatic photosynthetic algae that have existed on Earth for over 100 million years.
These microscopic organisms possess intricate silica-based cell walls (frustules). After death, their remains settle in aquatic environments including lakes, oceans, and marshes. Over millions of years, geological compression and mineralization accumulate these frustules into diatomite deposits. The mineral is globally mined in ancient aquatic basin regions, such as the United States, China, Germany, and Denmark.

1.2 Classification and Grade Standards

Based on processing methods, diatomite is mainly divided into two categories: natural diatomite and calcined diatomite.
Natural diatomite is directly mined and crushed for use. Calcined diatomite is treated at 600–1000℃ to remove organic substances, densify pore structures, and improve filtration performance and mechanical strength.
High-end food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade diatomite undergoes deep purification to reduce heavy metals and impurities, complying with FDA and EU international food safety standards. Featuring abundant reserves, low processing cost and eco-friendliness, diatomite is a vital sustainable material with continuously expanding application scenarios.

2. Core Characteristics of Diatomite

2.1 Physical Structure Characteristics

Diatomite’s physical properties are derived from fossilized diatom frustules, with high porosity as its core feature.
It has a porosity of 80%–90% and a large specific surface area, delivering strong adsorption capacity for liquids, gases and fine particles. Its rigid frustule structure maintains good stability under pressure, with excellent wear resistance and filtration performance.
The only physical limitations are low natural plasticity and relatively low mechanical strength caused by high porosity, which can be effectively improved by modification treatment.

2.2 Chemical Properties

The main chemical component of high-quality diatomite ore is amorphous SiO₂ (80%–95%), with trace impurities of Al₂O₃, Fe₂O₃ and organic matter.
It features excellent chemical inertness, resisting corrosion from most acids and alkalis (except hydrofluoric acid). Meanwhile, it is non-toxic and environmentally friendly, which guarantees safe application in food, pharmaceutical and environmental protection fields.

2.3 Thermal Performance

Diatomite has outstanding thermal performance with a high melting point of 1650–1750℃. It possesses excellent thermal stability and low thermal conductivity, making it an efficient and reliable thermal insulation and fire-resistant material for industrial and construction scenarios.

Diatomite microporous ceramic filter ring is a new type of environmentally friendly water treatment filter element made of natural diatomite and high-performance ceramic raw materials through special sintering process. It integrates the dual advantages of natural porous structure of diatomite and stable structure and high mechanical strength of microporous ceramics. 3.Diatomite ceramic filter ring features

  • Natural composite material: The core is made of composite natural diatomite and high-quality ceramic raw materials. The material is environmentally friendly and safe, meeting the material standards for food-grade and industrial-grade water treatment.
  • Dense microporous structure: Uniform and through micron-scale microporous structure is formed inside the product, with high porosity, providing sufficient space for filtration, adsorption and water quality activation.
  • Water quality activation effect: During the filtration process, it can regulate the mineral content of water, optimize the structure of water molecular clusters, make the purified water closer to natural active water, and improve water activity and taste.
  • Efficient adsorption and filtration: It can not only physically intercept large particle impurities such as sediment, rust, suspended solids and colloids in water through micropores, but also remove residual chlorine, odor, heavy metal ions and organic pollutants by virtue of the adsorption performance of diatomite.
  • Stable physical and chemical properties: Acid and alkali corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, water pressure impact resistance, not easy to deform or damage, suitable for different water quality and working conditions.

 

4.Diatomite Ring Processing Procedures and Processes

  • Raw material selection and proportioning: Select high-purity natural diatomite, match with high-quality ceramic aggregate, binder, pore-forming agent and other auxiliary raw materials, and accurately proportion according to scientific ratio to ensure balanced raw material performance.
  • Raw material mixing and forming: Put the proportioned raw materials into the mixing equipment, add appropriate amount of clean water and stir fully to form a uniform slurry with suitable fluidity, and then form into filter tube blanks through extrusion, grouting and other processes.
  • Low-temperature drying and shaping: Put the formed tube blanks into a constant temperature drying equipment for slow low-temperature drying to avoid cracking and deformation of the blanks, allow the internal moisture of the ring blanks to evaporate evenly, and meet the forming strength requirements.
  • High-temperature sintering and forming: Send the dried ring blanks into a high-temperature sintering furnace, and through multi-stage sintering processes such as gradient heating, high-temperature calcination, and slow cooling, the raw materials are fully sintered and fused to form a stable microporous ceramic structure, and finally formed into diatomite microporous ceramic filter rings.

  • Industrial water treatment field: Suitable for industrial wastewater pretreatment and circulating cooling water filtration in electronics, chemical, textile and other industries, removing impurities and pollutants in water, reducing the difficulty of wastewater treatment, and realizing water recycling.
  • Landscape water treatment: Used for water quality purification of community and park landscape pools, small rivers, to improve water clarity and ecological quality.

7.Diatomite Ceramic Ring Product Usage Precautions

  • Clean the dust on the surface of the filter ring before installation to avoid impurities entering the filter equipment and pipelines and affecting the filtration effect.
  • The product shall be operated within the rated water pressure and water temperature range during use, and overpressure and overtemperature use are strictly prohibited to prevent product damage.
  • For scenarios with many water impurities, the filter ring needs to be backwashed regularly to keep the micropores unobstructed and prolong the service life of the product.
  • During transportation and installation, avoid severe collision and falling to prevent cracks and breakage of the filter ring.
  • If the filter ring is damaged, seriously blocked and the performance cannot be restored by backwashing, the product should be replaced in time to ensure the water purification effect.
  • Store in a dry and ventilated environment to avoid long-term moisture and exposure to the sun, which will affect the product structure and performance.
