Fish Farming Aquarium Filtering and Oxygenating Air Bubble Stone

Fish Tank Air Stone for Aquarium Air Pump Bubble Stone Cylinder Disc

Introduction

An air bubble stone, also known as an air stone or diffuser, is a small device, typically made of porous material like wood, stone, or synthetic compounds, that attaches to the end of an airline tube from an air pump.

Its primary job is to break down the large, noisy stream of air from the pump into a dense stream of tiny, silent bubbles.

  • Cylindrical Stones: The most common type. Simple, effective, and cheap.
  • Disc Stones: Create a wider, curtain-like effect of bubbles.
  • Air Bars/Wands: Long, rigid tubes that create a uniform wall of bubbles along the back or side of the tank. Great for a dramatic visual effect.
  • Decorative Stones: Shaped like treasure chests, skulls, or other ornaments that release bubbles.

Material:

  • Sintered Glass/Aquarium Stone: Very fine pores for extremely tiny, silent bubbles. High efficiency but can clog faster.
  • Wood (Limewood): A traditional choice, produces a very fine mist of bubbles.
  • Synthetic/Porous Resin: Common for standard cylindrical stones. A good balance of performance and durability.

The oxygen increasing area of cylindrical bubble stones with the same specifications is smaller than that of spherical ones, and spherical ones have a better stirring effect on water quality than cylindrical ones. Sand table gas stones (sand cakes, nano plates, bread) have fine bubbles, quiet effects, dissolved oxygen, and energy saving (small air pumps can achieve the best effect)

  • 1. White corundum (ASW series, nano disk)
  • 2. Silicon carbide (A series, B series) mineral sand (AS series, glued color dyeing), glass sand (CS series, BT series)
  • 3.High temperature sintering.
  • 4.Surface is fine smooth.
  • 5.Dissolve more oxygen to the water.

Application scenarios

1. Daily Oxygenation and Stocking Density

This is the most direct application.

  • How it's applied: Diffusers are placed at the bottom of the water body. As billions of tiny bubbles rise, oxygen dissolves into the water while toxic gases like CO₂ are released.
  • Why it's critical: Water has a limited natural capacity to hold oxygen. The more fish you have, the faster they consume it. Aeration allows you to sustain much higher stocking densities than would be possible in an un-aerated pond or tank, directly increasing potential yield.
  • Scenario: Without aeration, a pond might support 2,000 fish per hectare. With efficient bottom-diffused aeration, it can support 10,000-20,000 fish per hectare.

2. Water Circulation and Destratification

This is as important as oxygenation in many cases.

How it's applied: A column of rising bubbles pulls bottom water to the surface, creating a continuous current. In circular tanks, a single diffuser in the center creates a circular flow. In rectangular ponds, diffusers are placed strategically to create a rotating flow pattern.

Why it's critical:

  • Eliminates Thermal Stratification: Prevents a warm, oxygenated top layer from sitting on top of a cold, oxygen-depleted, toxic (with H₂S) bottom layer.
  • Distributes Heat: Creates a uniform temperature, which is better for fish health and growth.
  • Mixes Waste: Prevents sludge from accumulating in stagnant spots and keeps organic waste suspended so it can be broken down by bacteria or flushed out by drains.

3. Waste Management and Biofiltration Support

Aeration is the engine that drives the nitrogen cycle.

  • How it's applied: Diffusers are placed directly in biofilters (e.g., moving bed bioreactors - MBBR) or in the main culture tank to circulate water through a filter.
  • Why it's critical: The beneficial bacteria that convert toxic ammonia (from fish waste) into less harmful nitrate are aerobic—they require oxygen. By providing oxygen and moving water past the bacterial colonies, aeration ensures efficient breakdown of waste, preventing toxic spikes.

4. Emergency Aeration (Saving the Crop)

This is a non-negotiable application for any serious fish farmer.

  • How it's applied: Backup aeration systems (often with a generator) are kept on standby. They are switched on immediately when the primary system fails or when signs of oxygen stress are observed (e.g., fish gasping at the surface, especially at dawn).
  • Why it's critical: A power outage or pump failure on a hot, still night can lead to a complete oxygen crash and the loss of an entire stock within hours. Emergency aeration is an insurance policy.

Technical Parameters Table

Parameter

Typical Range

Notes

Standard Bubble Size

1 - 3 mm (Fine to Very Fine)

Smaller bubbles have a higher surface-area-to-volume ratio, leading to superior Oxygen Transfer Efficiency (OTE).

Oxygen Transfer Efficiency (OTE)

5 - 8% per foot of depth

Significantly higher than rubber or plastic diffusers, especially in clean water.

Standard Airflow Range

2 - 10 SCFM per square foot of diffuser area

(Standard Cubic Feet per Minute). Designed for a wide operational range.

Recommended Operating Depth

10 - 30 feet (3 - 9 meters)

Performs optimally under higher hydrostatic pressure.

Start-Up / Wet Pressure Drop

4 - 8 inches H₂O

Low pressure drop at the beginning of aeration cycle.

Dynamic / Operating Pressure

6 - 12 inches H₂O above static water pressure

Dependent on depth and airflow rate. Requires a capable blower.
