A significant feature of boron carbide ceramics is their high hardness, with a microhardness of approximately 50000 MPa (50 GPa), second only to diamond (90-100 GPa) and CBN (80-90 GPa). Their grinding efficiency can reach 60% -70% of that of diamond, which is twice that of SiC and 1-2 times that of corundum. They have good acid and alkali resistance and a small coefficient of thermal expansion (4.5 x 10-6 ℃), resulting in good thermal stability, but poor impact resistance and high brittleness.
Boron Carbide is one of the hardest man-made materials available in commercial quantities that has a finite melting point low enough to permit its relatively easy fabrication into shapes.
