1. Definition and Unique Properties
1.1 Definition and Formation
Zirconia ceramic (Zirconium Dioxide, ZrO₂) is a high-performance advanced inorganic non-metallic ceramic material, commonly stabilized with yttria (Y₂O₃) to achieve tetragonal phase transformation toughening. Unlike many brittle structural ceramics, phase transformation toughening endows zirconia with exceptional fracture toughness and bending strength. It is formed via powder molding and high-temperature sintering; finished blanks require diamond tools for precision machining to produce high-strength, wear-resistant structural components.
1.2 Grade Standard
Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ, the most common commercial grade) is the mainstream high-strength zirconia ceramic. It balances outstanding mechanical strength, hardness, wear resistance and moderate thermal insulation. Custom formulations are available for specialized needs such as thermal barrier coatings or oxygen sensing applications.
2. Core Characteristics of Zirconia Ceramics
2.1 Mechanical Performance
The most prominent feature is its ultra-high flexural strength and Vickers hardness. With a flexural strength up to 1000 MPa and Vickers hardness of 1300 HV, it delivers excellent wear resistance and impact resistance via phase transformation toughening, far outperforming alumina ceramics in toughness.
2.2 Electrical Properties
Zirconia ceramic acts as a reliable electrical insulator at room temperature. It features stable insulation performance, low leakage current. Note: Doped zirconia becomes ionic conductive at elevated temperatures, which is a special characteristic for oxygen sensor applications.
2.3 Thermal Properties
Zirconia ceramic has a linear expansion coefficient of 10×10⁻⁶/°C (20–500°C) and low thermal conductivity (<2 W/(m·K)), making it a good thermal barrier material. It can withstand rapid temperature changes within its service range, though its thermal shock resistance is inferior to machinable glass ceramic and silicon nitride.
2.4 Mechanical and Chemical Stability
Zirconia ceramic is dense and non-porous (0% water absorption), chemically inert, and resistant to most acids, alkalis and organic solvents. It is non-magnetic, low in outgassing, and its fully densified microstructure delivers good hermeticity, suitable for wear, corrosion and vacuum environments.
3. Advantages of Zirconia Ceramics
3.1 Superior Mechanical Toughness & Wear Resistance
Benefiting from phase transformation toughening, zirconia boasts ultra-high flexural strength and hardness. It resists crack propagation far better than conventional oxide ceramics, ideal for friction, impact and high-load scenarios, greatly extending service life of wear parts.
3.2 Dense, Impermeable & Excellent Corrosion Resistance
With 0% water absorption and fully densified sintered structure, it blocks liquid and gas penetration. It maintains stable performance against most corrosive media, no dissolution or contamination, perfect for high-purity fluid handling and corrosive working conditions.
3.3 Low Thermal Conductivity
Its thermal conductivity is less than 2 W/(m·K), giving it good heat insulation capability. Combined with its high mechanical strength, it can serve as both structural support and thermal isolation components under moderate high-temperature conditions.
3.4 Dimensional Stability & Non-Magnetic
High-density sintered zirconia has excellent dimensional stability under load and temperature cycling, non-magnetic, free from magnetic interference. It works reliably in precision equipment, medical and electronic systems where magnetism is forbidden.

4. Application Fields
4.1 Precision Machinery & Wear Industry
Thanks to ultra-high strength and wear resistance, zirconia ceramic is widely used for high-load friction parts:
Wear sleeves, guide pins, sliding bearings and valve cores
Precision cutting tools, forming dies and anti-wear liners
Fiber/textile industry wire guides and ceramic rollers
4.2 Medical & Healthcare
Biocompatible yttria-stabilized zirconia is a staple biomedical ceramic:
Dental crowns, bridges and implant abutments
Orthopedic prosthetic components and surgical instrument parts
Medical precision wear-resistant structural parts
4.3 Electronic & Semiconductor Industry
Non-magnetic, high-insulation, low-contamination properties meet strict semiconductor requirements:
Electronic insulating spacers and positioning jigs
Wafer handling components, electrostatic chuck accessories
High-purity vacuum equipment structural parts
4.5 General Industrial & Energy Components
Oxygen sensor electrolyte substrates (special doped zirconia)
High-pressure pump sealing elements, corrosion-resistant nozzles
Luxury watch cases, bearing balls for high-end instruments
